Painswick: Water in the Garden

Some more photos from Painswick. The first shows a structure that's just there to be pretty: a pierced wall partly surrounding a circular pool. The nice thing is of course the reflection of the arches in the pool. What you can't see in the photo is that the pool was full of wildlife. There were newts and little crabs and other small creepy-crawlies living happily in it.

Much more rustic and also functional, is this well surround made of local stone. The unglazed fish relief tile on the right and the lawn roller on the left have been placed to decorate the well and I'm sure the lush fern has been planted too. Still, the whole scene manages to look uncontrived, as if the objects and the plant just happened to end up there without any self-conscious guiding intelligence. It's a much sought-after effect.

Finally an abstract photo of cloud reflections in the rippling Plunge Pool near the well above.
